Remodeling Your Home

The value added when remodeling your home is an important benefit to be considered.  The kitchen and bathroom are the two areas that most home owners consider first and are the two areas that the home value is affected the greatest.

The very first step in any remodel project is a plan. Remodeling your home is priceless, and totally necessary. The first step is to decide in which room to begin. Maybe the entire house needs updating. Keep in mind the size of a project.

Draw up your home. You may need to hire a contractor to do this. Or you may be able to do it yourself with precise measurements.  Drawing up your home is an important step in remodeling.  Think about the structure. Think about walls and if you want to keep them. Think about size of rooms, and your tastes. Starting on paper keeps things in perspective.

Look at magazines and online.  Get an idea of the end product. What do you want the home to look like? Do you like modern? Or are antiques more your style?  Add this to remodeling your home.  By making a list of what you want will keep you from getting overwhelmed in the stores.

Hit the stores. Sometimes the home improvement stores are not the best option.  Look for places that have what you want.  Sometimes you can get it for less.  Look at everything you will want and make a budget.  Home remodeling is often under budgeted.  It is easy to look over small items. Light switch covers, and handles for cupboards, will add up quickly.

Think about hiring a contractor to do the work. Do it yourself projects can quickly get out of control, especially if you’ve never remodeled before. Kitchen remodeling and bathroom remodeling are important consideration of your home, having someone else do the hard work is beneficial. If you insist on doing it all yourself, attend classes that show you how to get it right. Any wobble in the tile, or miss-fitted door will always be noticed.

Time is an issue as well. Remodeling your home needs to be conducive to your current schedule.  It takes a long time to get things right, and if you only have an hour or two then it will take even longer.  Do you want to spend every night and every weekend working? If not, start small. Paint one room at a time. Or, again, hire someone to do the work, while you are at work.

Finally, remember the small things. A new vase or throw pillows can finish a room. Proper application of paint makes a room sharp. Finishing the project is important. Don’t let yourself get lazy. Good enough is never good enough.
